African Arts Classes

Come out for an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the cultural arts! A variety of class offerings with guest artists originating from Guinea, West Africa. All levels of students are welcome to classes and encouraged to come experience the joy and connection of African drum and dance!
March 8
Kids classes: $20 per student or both classes for $35
Adult classes: $25 per class. Two classes for $45 or all three classes for $65!
Kids Breakdance Class
12:00-1:00 pm
This fun class is for children of all ages! Taught by hiphop artist and breakdancer Mikey Mestas who will get kids top rocking, doing footwork, and moving and spinning on the ground. Mikey has taught youth for numerous years and is a beloved teacher by all who attend his classes. Kids 7-12 can be dropped off for class and kids under 7 are welcome to attend with an adult. Wear comfortable sneakers.
Kids Acrobatics Class
1:15-2:15
Join Guinean acrobats for some fun tumbling! Led by N'faly Drame, multiple acrobat artists will be there to spot, assist and teach the art of acrobatics, and wow and amaze with some tricks of their own! This class is open to youth of all ages, but children under 7 need to be accompanied by an adult. The acrobats will provide a fun and safe environment to explore flips, handstands, group acrobatics, and more. Mats will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothes that allow for a full range of movement and going upside down.
Teen and Adult Guinea Dance Class
2:30- 3:45
African dance is joyful, dynamic, and a great workout! Accompanied by live drumming, this class will be led by Fara Tolno who is known across the nation for his inclusive and engaging teaching style. Come learn some of the rich traditions of movement and rhythm from Guinea in a fun and friendly class. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes that allow for a full range of motion. Class will begin with a warm up and move into a choreography sequence. If you have never taken an African dance class, Fara is the best teacher to start with!
Teen and Adult Drum Class
4:00-5:15
West African drum class will get the beat in your body! This class will be taught by Etienne Tolno and will explore a rhythm from Guinea, West Africa. Class will begin with warming up your hands and learning the basic sounds of the drum. Then multiple parts of a rhythm will be learned with breaks and overlap to form a full musical piece. Please bring your own drum if possible, limited drums will be available for use in class. Youth 12 and under are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Hand drumming is an instrument accessible for all to learn, play and enjoy.
Teen and Adult Guinea Dance Class
5:30- 6:45
This West African Dance Class will be taught by Aicha Camara. Aicha will provide a fun and exciting class that will inspire and get your body moving! This class will be accompanied by a full live percussion ensemble and will begin with a warm up followed by choreography. Bring a water bottle and comfortable clothes that allow for a full range of movement. Come experience the wonder and excitement of African dance with a kind and welcoming teacher.
